The arranger writes: The idea of arranging this piece for large brass ensemble was a result of my intention to present Steven Mead’s lyrical qualities and the huge potential of his rich and colorful sound to a Croatian audience when he was a guest soloist in Zagreb. While we spoke about the program for the concert, I mentioned Ravel’s Pavane as a nice addition to my Concerto and the other Pavane (one by Faure, for solo euphonium and harp), and Steven supported the idea instantly, as it turned out that this piece was his favorite in his early euphonium soloist days. As he soon became a world famous virtuoso, where listeners constantly asked for higher and faster bravuras, I gladly used my chance to present the forgotten poetic and warm side of the euphonium. I avoided the fashionable stereotypes of many of today’s composers–making an artist break his fingers or lips by choosing extra fast pieces originally for violin or flute and arranging it for tuba.

The inspiring challenge was to create the atmosphere present in Ravel’s own orchestration of this piece, where no instrument plays a typical solo role. It wasn’t easy to achieve so many colors without strings and woodwinds. Yet, here we have the euphonium as a lead voice while it is also well incorporated into vertical blocks with french horns, trombones, and trumpets. Full symphony sized brass sections fuction here mainly to provide harmonic body, with the great percussive and melodic help of marimba and vibraphone. The result is an arrangement that is demanding in a sense of creating the right flow (not too slow – as Ravel hated it this way). Pavane is, after all, a dance.

A recording of this arrangment can be found on Bocchino’s CD release “Croatian Euphonic Brass,” together with a recording of another publication by Potenza, an arrangement of the Pavane by G. Faure, presented on this CD in the best possible way–by Steven Mead, who inspired me to try to give these masterpieces new shape.

–Vanja Lisjak

Steve writes, "its one of the most beautiful pieces I'ver ever recorded".

About Concerto for Tuba/Euphonium Quartet

This may be Mike Forbes's most expansive and challenging work for the tuba / euphonium quartet. Like Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra," this composition has no accompaniment and is a tour de force for the quartet.

Drawing on extended techniques (slide removal, multiphonics), Michael Forbes creates a dramatic and colorful work that particularly highlights the virtuosity of each musician.

Michael Forbes (born 1973 in Morgantown, West Virginia, USA), studied first with Mark Lusk and Marty Erickson (Bachelor’s Degree at Penn State University), then with tubist and composer, John Stevens (Master degree from the University of Wisconsin) and finally with world renowned tubist, Toby Hanks (Doctor’s Degree from the University of Maryland). Along the way, he also studyied with Stuart Roebuck, Brian Kingsley and Andrew Duncan (University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music, United Kingdom). He began his career as tuba player, soloist, conductor and arranger with the U.S. Army Band, «Pershing’s Own» in Washington, D.C.

Best known for his fine compositions and arrangements, Michael Forbes has received numerous commissions from a variety of well-known artists and chamber ensembles. Many of his works have been recorded and are also regularly selected in concert programs or as test pieces for international competitions.

As a soloist and as part of the internationally recognized «Sotto Voce Tuba Quartet», Michael Forbes is regularly invited to give performances and clinics at universities and conferences around the globe. He currently teaches at Illinois State University.

The Concerto in D minor, BWV 596, is a notable work in the repertoire of Johann Sebastian Bach. It is a transcription of Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto for Strings in G minor, RV 156. Bach, known for his exceptional skills in adaptation and arrangement, took Vivaldi’s original composition and transformed it into a concerto for organ.

The transcription process was a common practice during the Baroque era, where composers frequently adapted and rearranged works by their contemporaries or predecessors. In the case of BWV 596, Bach not only transcribed the original work but added his own artistic touches.

In this publication, Michael Forbes takes Bach’s organ transcription and adapts it to the euphonium/tuba quartet. Brass ensembles have the advantage of being able to easily imitate the sound of the organ in its various registers.

    About Chaconne

Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924), an Italian composer and pianist, made significant contributions through his creative transcriptions of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works. His fascination with Bach’s music led him to reimagine compositions with virtuosity, adding unique touches to bring the timeless beauty of the Baroque era to a broader audience.

One of Busoni’s most renowned transcriptions is the “Chaconne” from Bach’s Violin Partita No. 2. This monumental work for piano captures Bach’s essence while infusing Busoni’s expressive interpretations. The transcription showcases Busoni’s virtuosic technique, expanding the tonal possibilities of the piano.

Beyond the “Chaconne,” Busoni transcribed organ works, chorale preludes, and keyboard suites, often adding ornamentations and harmonic explorations in the late-Romantic style. His approach reflected a belief in tradition and the evolution of musical styles, preserving and revitalizing the past.

A very exciting work for euphonium and brass quintet . composed for Steven Mead and Spanish Brass; The title comes from the constantly-shifting meter and somewhat hectic feel, the melody bouncing back and forth between soloist and quintet, and the shifts between somewhat unconnected sections.

The composer Ben McMillan writes: The main melody was something that had been in my head for a while, one of the many musical seeds that I constantly find myself humming or whistling absentmindedly. This became the first piece I ever had published, and the second ever recorded.

There are not many works for Euphonium and string quartet of an original nature, so this major work, Motions is to be welcomed and for the ambitious euphonium player, can be an extremely useful and effective piece of music..

    Program Notes
Motions was commissioned by the Tuba Bach Festival of Big Rapids, Michigan, Ed Mallett, director, for performance by the Harlem String Quartet with Ed Mallett on euphonium.

The work is in five movements, each alluding to a different “motion.” Movement 1, “perpetual,” uses a continuous pattern of 16th notes depicting perpetual motion. Movement 2, “slow,” makes obvious reference to very slow motion. The harmony provides much of the interest of this movement with suspended figures, added note chords, extended tertian sounds, and shifting tonality. “Contrary,” the motion of Movement 3, uses contrary motion throughout within the melodic vocabulary of a blues scale and traditional jazz-like harmonies and rhythms. Movement 4, “stationary” is based on a pedal “B” throughout the whole movement played by euphonium, cello and violin 1. As in Movement 2, the harmony provides interest and variance around the sustained “B.” “Oscillatory” motion is the subject of Movement 5. The movement is based on an oscillating minor third with driving rhythms and fluctuating dynamics.

This is the version for euphonium (with optional tuba part)and percussion (marimba and vibraphone).

Spitfire was inspired by the British fighter planes of the same name used by the Royal Air Force and several other countries during World War II. Designed as a short-range, high-performance interceptor aircraft, the Supermarine Spitfire was one of the fastest planes in service during the war. The quick moto perpetuo nature of the composition was an attempt to capture the speed and excitement of this historic plane. The word spitfire is also used to describe a quick-tempered or highly excitable person, which is also appropriate.

Spitfire was written for Dr. Brian Meixner for performance at the Southeast and Northeast Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conferences (SERTEC & NERTEC). The second movement is the most original and daring, And we have happily described this movement as the beatbox movement, as you will see from the video. Maybe you need this challenge!

Textures is a symphony in three movements that explores differing levels of thickness in scoring and harmonic timbre.

The first movement,Transparent, explores pentatonic harmonies, with intense multi-meter hocket and even a fugal structure. Rhythmic motives that permeate the entire work are introduced here.  Translucent, slow and meditative, has a cloudy texture with its diatonic and modal character. The last movement, Opaque, opens with a recapitulation of the previous harmonic textures before exploring its more busy rhythmic, chromatic texture. The movement also recalls the various themes from previous movements before driving home its own theme followed by a rhythmic, bombastic finale.

    The three movements:

    1. Transparent (5')

    2. Translucent (8')

    3. Opaque (5')

Fasten Your Seatbelt  is a septet in two movements for solo euphonium (with alternative parts for trombone or tenor saxophone), alto saxophone and trumpet, bass guitar, electric piano, drum set and marimba / congas.

It is a typical example of the versatile composing talent of Roland Szentpali. His approach to jazz is well structured, with virtuoso written sequences over a dynamic rhythm section sustaining the three melodic wind instruments (with optional improvisation spaces for them).

    I. Hunting Instinct is a 7/4 speedy groove music running over long basso continuo ostinati of the rhythm section including collectiv virtuoso intrusions of the wind instruments and improvised sequences.

II. Transfer Passenger is pushing another kind of speedy groove, here on a more traditional 4/4, inspired by the human traffic jam in crowded international airports...

    Indeed, fasten your seatbelt...

The piece is set outside of the earth's atmosphere, in space. It explores the idea of a person being completely detached from anything (Set Adrift) and having no human contact. There are three sections in this piece each with their own emotional ranges. The opening section has a feeling of loneliness, while the middle section has a feeling of enjoyment which turns to despair as the piece fades out into the dark, and unending universe.

Here is a new contemporary work, part of the Leading Edge series of original compositions for the euphonium. About 'Calling', the composer writes, "Very often, it seems, my music takes on a life of its own. I wasn't sure what I was going to do when I started this composition but it didn't take long for the piece to decide what it wanted to be. The sources of the tape part are not important. The inspiration for the Euphonium line is not important. In my mind, this piece simply IS.  The title, Calling seemed appropriate to me since, to my ears, it sounds as if the soloist is calling out to this eternal droning E-flat that is omnipresent. In some ways, this feels like the first work in this style that I have ever composed. In other ways, it feels like I've been writing this way forever."

The backing track for this piece is available as a free download HERE This publication comes complete with composer biography and performance tips from David Thornton. The work can also be heard on David Thornton’s CD Parallel Realities

More about the Leading Edge Series :

“The Leading Edge is a series of solo works for euphonium that push boundaries. The formats and structures are varied, using composers from many different backgrounds, but the concept is a constant: to provide our repertoire with fresh blood. The works are innovative yet practical; pushing boundaries isn’t always about being super contemporary or extraordinarily difficult, though there are certainly some challenging pieces presented here!

The compositional process is fascinating, how new ideas come to fruition and are given a voice through the chosen instrument. The composers involved in this project have been selected very carefully – musicians who see their work as having a distinct voice and strive for this in their musical language or sound worlds within their music.

From unaccompanied works to electro-acoustic repertoire, from conventional form with piano to programmatic music with chamber groups, the series covers a broad spectrum of styles that will suit euphonium players with the desire to find new expressive avenues for our instrument. We have enjoyed learning and performing these pieces as we hope you do too.”

Here is Kuklos, another from the new Leading Edgew series of contemporary works for euphonium.

Kuklos, meaning ‘full circle' in Greek, portrays a performer practising alone in an empty hall. This is reflected in the work's three sections, the first of which incorporates the performer walking into the hall and taking the instrument from its case. The piece then starts when the mouthpiece is placed, triggering a delay effect in the tape part. This then continues with sounds associated with an off stage warm up; blowing air through the instrument, checking valves, and long notes. This all becomes intertwined with the pre-recorded tape (digital playback track).

The second section is more virtuosic and incorporates many extended techniques such as multiphonics, half valve glissandi, flutter tongue, and singing through the instrument. This is then followed by a final ‘warm down' section, incorporating the soloist playing a choral before packing away his instrument, and leaving the hall.

The harmonic material of the solo euphonium is based on 2 harmonic series; the first being concert Bb at 58.27Hz, the second introduced later in the piece being concert C at 65.4Hz. For this reason the piece could be described as Spectral in its compositional style. We first hear the introduction of the harmonic series in the tape part as a distant descending scale, and as this moves to the foreground, it slowly starts affecting the soloist's harmonic material.

The tape part was constructed entirely from recorded euphonium sounds played by David Childs. The composer treated these sounds in the studio using a wide variety of manipulative software. Some of which consisted: Ring Modulation, Transposition, GRM, Resonators, Spectral Inverter and delay. Kuklos received its first performance on 28th June 2004 at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama performed by David Childs in the presence of the composer.

Here is Nightwalker, one of the pieces in the new Leading Edge Series of contemporary works for euphonium.

Nightwalker was originally composed in 2002 for Linda Merrick (Clarinet) and Philip Mead (Piano) and received its premiere at Vestry Hall, London College of Music, October 2002. Nightwalker was re-arranged into its current form for subsequent performances, with the piano part incorporated into the Digital Playback.

Written originally as a Clarinet piece, this version for Euphonium was adapted for David Thornton and was first performed at the New Zealand International Brass Festival, 22nd September 2012, Wellington Salvation Army Hall, Wellington, NZ.

Nightwalker depicts a descent into nightmare. The Euphonium assumes the role of the dreamer, with the CD providing the soundworld of the nightmare itself. Wind, thunder, and lightning are intertwined with ghostly footsteps, bells ringing, various forms of wildlife, and a whole host of other sounds in what is a light-hearted take on the whole genre of ‘horror’.

The score is laid out with the Euphonium part sandwiched between the guide track that contains reference points for the SFX, and an outline of the original piano part. Timings are given in minutes and seconds and correspond to the Digital Playback timing.

The Digital Playback track for this piece is available as a free download from this page.

Let There Be Funk - D.Edward Davis - Amplified Euphonium, Octave Effects Pedal and Digital Playback

    £14.95
    Reference:  SMLEA08
    Stock:  In stock In stock
    Quantity:

Let There Be Funk was premiered by tubist Rex Martin in February 2002 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The music is as it suggests, mostly written in a funk style with the occasional lyrical interlude.

The funk passages move between tempos in a schizophrenic way, deliberately unsettling the listener and cleverly weaving a structure that builds throughout the work.

Although originally intended for Tuba, the music is performed here by using Euphonium and guitar octave effect pedal. The resulting double octave effect and sound distortion is ideal for the writing.
The electronic track is performed by Brian James, Mark Carlson, Rex Martin and the composer D. Edward Davis.

The backing track for this piece is available as a free download from this page.

This publication comes complete with composer biography and performance tips from David Thornton. The work can also be heard on David Thornton’s CD Parallel Realities (WOS079) available on this site.

Tiamat - Lucy Pankhurst - Euphonium and Brass Quintet

    £14.95

    Stock:  In stock In stock

Tiamat is an exploratory programmatic work for solo euphonium and brass quintet, one of the new works in The Leading Edge series of contemporary works for euphonium. The title hails the name of a dragon, from the fantasy role-playing adventure game and the 1980s children's cartoon: Dungeons & Dragons. Tiamat is a five-headed dragon. Each head is a different colour and has its own elemental properties:

    LIGHTNING/blue (trumpet 1), ACID/black (trumpet 2), ICE/white (horn), FIRE/red (trombone), and POISON/green (tuba)

The instruments of the quintet each represent one of these heads. Each element has its own specific theme in the piece, introduced by its relative instrument. The thematic ideas for each element are intended to be a musical representation of its properties and effects.

    LIGHTNING - disjointed staccato notes.
ACID - repeated 3-note pattern, overlapping in texture, abrasive.
ICE - repeated staccato (and stopped) notes with a dim. Brittle, yet sharp.
    FIRE - flutter-tongue/trem. effects.
POISON - descending chromatic scale, oozing, seeping.

The ‘rip's in the quintet are intended to be the snapping and biting of the jaws of the dragon.

The solo euphonium takes the role of the hero in the tale, who has sworn to defeat the dragon and restore peace to the surrounding lands.

This publication comes complete with composer biography and performance tips from David Thornton. The work can also be heard on David Thornton’s CD Parallel Realities (WOS079) available on this site.
