This is the new second set of variations that now exists for euphonium and piano!!
Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen is based on the story of the same title by Prosper Merimee and concerns the renowned Carmen, a beautiful gypsy with a fiery temper. Several well-known pieces from the opera have taken on a life separate to the work: the Prelude (overture), the Toreador song and the Habanera. A number of classical composers have used themes from Carmen as the basis for works of their own. This Carmen Fantasy is a virtuoso showpiece in the tradition of fantasias on operatic themes. Like in the opera, the soloist most not only have a great range, but also exhibit superior dramatic skills in order to portray Carmen’s character. Almost every technical challenge for the brass soloist is contained here or what is more the soloist must fully understand beautiful song like aspect and stylistic demands of this music. This Carmen Fantasy No.2 is mainly based on the ‘fantaisie brillante’ for flute by Francois Borne (1840-1920) which is a staple of the romantic flute repertoire. This is fun to play but not for the faint-hearted. It is a huge challenge for the advanced euphonium player. Fancy a challenge ?? Here it is!
