The Last Sleep of the Virgin (Le dernier sommeil de la Vierge) was the only piece to survive in Jules Massenet's lifetime from an oratorio in four scenes based on episodes from the life of The Virgin Mary from the Annunciation to her death. It was first performed at the Paris opera in 1880. La Vierge enjoyed modest popularity in its day but the atmospheric ‘Dernier Sommeil', the prelude to the final section was encored and soon found its way into popular orchestral programmes. It became one of Thomas Beecham's favourite ‘lollipops' and could become the euphonium's answer to Massenet's massive violin hit ‘Meditation' from ‘Thaïs'.
