This is a brand-new virtuosic unaccompanied solo for euphonium, composed by the Lithuanian composer Mindaugas Rarivanas, born 1983. He is also a tuba player with the Lithuanian Army Orchestra and several brass quintet's and lectures at the music School in Vilnius.
This solo was composed for the young Lithuanian euphonium virtuoso Algirdas Matonis, now studying at the RNCM, who performed this live at the ITEC 2012 in Linz, Austria.
It places large demands on the soloist, particularly in the high range and some multi-phonics, but it's extremely warmly received by audiences when performed well. It is lyrical and at times highly rhythmic and also leaves a little room for improvisation. The total duration of this two movement work is about 4 minutes.
It is a perfect solo work in a longer recital and one that really grabs the attention!!
