In stockIreland is the home of many fine folk songs, none more charming perhaps than 'The Sally Gardens'. The composer first encountered it in the arrangement by Benjamin Britten. The music has a poignant quality which is rather haunting, reflecting the tone of regret in the last lines of each stanza: "She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs, But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears'.
It's a beautiful melodic work for euphonium and brass band.
